SHOULDER BLADE (SCAPULAR) EXERCISES
FOR PATIENTS WHO HAVE UNDERGONE A NECK DISSECTION

This video shows you a series of exercises to do after head and neck cancer surgery, particularly after a neck dissection. They will help mobility and strengthen your muscles.
All the scapular strengthening exercises can be done at home using a few everyday props such as:
• broom handle
• Pilates ball
• pulley
• resistance bands such as a Theraband
• bath towel and hand towel
• weights half kilo to 2 kilos or can of soup or plastic bottle filled with water.
After surgery, many people feel stiff and a little sore. Simply getting things out of a high cupboard can be frustrating, difficult and sometimes painful.
I chose these exercises, following the different physiotherapy department instruction sheets I was given and making them part of your daily routine will help you get back to ‘near normal’. Always consult your physician before doing any exercise and remember to drink water before you start any exercises for the scapular following head and neck cancer surgery including a neck dissection.
